I had already watched this series a few months ago, and since, contrary to the producers’ enthusiastic predictions, it didn’t knock me off my feet, I was waiting to see if I could feel some good “The Perfect Couple” fluids after a while. Certainly, the paradisiacal setting of the island of Nantucket, the beautiful interiors and costumes of the characters, all the glitz of the world of the American elite settling in villas on the Cape Cod Peninsula, created for the production, works in its favor. However, the plot and characters, despite the good cast, are rather a collection of tired and predictable gimmicks. The only thing that stayed in my memory after watching “The Perfect Couple” was the divine dress from the Italian house Missoni, in which Meghann Fahy dances on the beach in the glow of the setting sun. I would definitely like to own one.

The series “The Perfect Couple” – around the wedding reception

Netflix’s production based on Elin Hilderbrand’s novel had many strengths that could have made it a real hit. From great actors, led by Nicole Kidman, to an intriguing story with a detective plot, to visual delights that allow viewers to enjoy the magnificent island landscape – all the ingredients were the perfect recipe for success. However, something went wrong, and despite the gorgeous colorful setting, the whole thing fell secondary to previous productions in this style, such as “Big Little Lies” and “ The White Lotus.”

The main character of the series is Greer Garrison (Nicole Kidman), a popular novelist who, together with her husband Tag (Liev Schreiber), lives in a luxurious mansion on the island of Nantucket. The lavish wedding of her son Benjie (Billy Howle) is about to take place, so more invited guests descend on the villa. Among them are Benjie’s brother Thomas (Jack Reynor) and his wife Abby (Dakota Fanning), French family friend Isabel (Isabelle Adjani) and the parents of the bride-to-be. Amelia, as this is the name of Benje’s beloved (played by Eve Hewson), in Greer’s opinion does not fit into a wealthy and influential family. The penniless young girl is, in the eyes of the famous writer, a careerist, and her best friend Merritt, who is devoid of manners, only makes the situation worse. Meanwhile, in the heat of pre-wedding preparations at night, a mysterious murder of one of the guests occurs….

Perfect Couple Netflix review

“Perfect Couple” – another unmasking of the American elite

Of course, as the police investigation is launched, more closely guarded secrets of the family, which seems less and less ideal, come to light. Not only is the planned wedding coming into question, but also the seemingly perfectly harmonious marriage of Greer and Tag. “The Perfect Couple” centers around the popular theme of exposing the dark face of American socialites. And perhaps it would even be an interesting production, because it does not watch badly, but the duplicity of the solutions used is glaring. It is visible primarily at the level of characters, constructed from painfully predictable elements.

Nicole Kidman, whom I adore, does not surprise in the role of Greer, on the contrary, she seems to be bored with playing the same character over and over again – an elegant lady from good company, whose perfect private life is just a shell. This time she lacks charisma and ambiguity, which have always given this actress’ creations a certain amount of unpredictability and mystery. Greer is merely annoying, perhaps occasionally evoking sympathy, but nothing more. The same, in my opinion, is true of the other characters, the idea for whom apparently exhausted the creators in the leading scene of their dancing together on the beach. Everyone has something behind them, but on the whole they are flat, undistinguished characters who fade from memory as soon as you turn off the next episode. One looks in vain here for a personality as intriguing as the one created by Jennifer Collidge in “The White Lotus.”

“The Perfect Couple” and a colorful dress from Missoni

One thing that captivates me about the Netflix series “The Perfect Couple” is the colorful world that is a mix of luxurious villas and magnificent coastal landscape. Perfectly styled Hamptons-style interiors, which are dominated by sandy and blue hues alluding to the azure water outside the windows. They are meant to evoke the whiteness of sea foam, the delicate colors of shells cast ashore, while comfortable furniture with elements of wicker and sea grass invite you to relax in harmony with the spirit of nature.

The quintessential stylishness of Netflix’s production, meanwhile, is the costumes of the story’s characters. The furore is primarily caused by the phenomenal dress that Merritt wears to the pre-wedding party. The gorgeous creation from Missoni certainly catches the attention of the female part of the audience. I, at least, love it, and the beautiful Meghan Fahy phenomenally showcases each of the assets of this semi-beach creation. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to afford it, but for now, my regret is sweetened by a bottle of perfume from the same Italian fashion house. It’s like a dream, of a perfect life in a place where the sun always shines and the breeze from the azure sea dispels all small and big sorrows.
